In Karachi, 14-year-old Tanveer courageously recovered the body of 3-year-old Ibrahim, who had fallen into an open manhole. The incident occurred near NIPA Chowrangi on Sunday when Ibrahim fell into the manhole outside a departmental store. His body was found 15 hours later, nearly one kilometre away, in a nearby drainage channel.
Tanveer, a local grocery shop worker, was the one to retrieve Ibrahim’s body. The area was crowded with people when news spread about the missing child. Tanveer, noticing the strong flow of water in one direction of the drainage, decided to check the area. When he peered into the drain, he spotted the child’s foot.
Tanveer acted quickly, climbing down the drainage channel and pulling Ibrahim’s body out with great difficulty. As he was carrying the body, police officers stopped him and asked for it. However, Tanveer insisted that he would hand it over to the child’s parents, which he did shortly after they arrived at the scene.
Tanveer’s brave act did not go unnoticed. Later, Tanveer and his father were invited to the SSP East office, where they were honoured. SSP East Dr. Farrukh presented Tanveer with a cash reward and a bouquet. Ibrahim’s father was also honored with a garland in recognition of the teenager’s heroic efforts.
This incident highlights the dangers posed by open manholes and the importance of quick action in emergencies. Tanveer’s bravery and determination to help have made him a local hero.
